I went to check on the worms because they were escaping, and when i tried to turn the bin, the bottom inch was like a brick. I then realized that the bin was nearly solid vermicompost and they were nearly out of food! (only a few small pieces which I put in the new bin.) I also added a little sand for grit, a few egg shells, filtered water and non-color soy-ink newspaper.

The best friends of soil can help out in managing organic, bio degradable waste from our homes,cities and farms. Nutrients for soil can be recovered from urban waste. The Nitrogen,phosphorous ,potash and carbon cycles are all as important as the water cycle. Closing the loop for nutrients is crucial for sustainability.
Once you get your worms bedded down minimal care is required. They like to be left alone but I keep messing with them because, as my mom use to say: "I'm handsy." It's an inherited trait I got from my dad.
My vermicompost bin has gone sour. I added to much food a couple days ago and the worms have all retreated to the lower levels. Here is what I did to fix the problem.

A look at my rotting garbage bin of worms after approx. 4 months. There were many tiny baby worms and lots of cacoons. I plan to do nothing more for another 6 weeks and I should have at least 10 lbs of high quality castings.
