When a solution of sodium tartrate is added to dilute hydrogen peroxide nothing seems to happen. When a small amount of cobalt chloride solution is added a vigorous reaction occurs. Analysis shows the gas contains a lot of CO2, indicating that besides H2O2 decomposition a lot of tartrate is oxidised . Probably the cobalt catalyses this by forming peroxo and superoxo complexes.
